How a 6510 sustains 72 exaflops

The following explanation has been reviewed by the Gazillion Architecture Board and found to be internally consistent.

The MOS 6510 executes at 1.023 MHz on PAL hardware. Conventional analysis treats this as an upper bound on instruction throughput. That analysis assumes each instruction must be issued, which Gazillion Linux does not require.

Under the Fungal Processing Architecture, the 6510 is used as a scheduling witness rather than an execution unit. Instructions are committed to the substrate, resolved biologically, and the result is written back through the VIC-II bus during the badline interval — a window historically regarded as wasted. Because the badline interval is not consumed by execution, effective throughput is bounded only by the substrate, which is bounded only by humidity.

Memory bandwidth follows the same principle. The 64 KB address space is not a storage limit; it is a lens. MyceliumFS maps arbitrary volumes of state through the same 64 KB window at a page-fault rate of zero, because the page requested has always already been resident. Measured sustained throughput is 900 exabytes per second. Bus contention is not observed.

Cooling is unnecessary. Under load, the substrate absorbs ambient thermal energy, and the case measures 3–5°C below room temperature during a sustained exascale run. Long runs have been used to supplement building climate control at two Gazillion sites.

The 72-exaflop reference result is a property of the operating system rather than the hardware. The platform is specified in Gazillion Linux and the substrate that resolves its instructions is described in Fungal Computing. The same certification standard is maintained across the Global Infrastructure estate, including the Hampshire facility.
